Chongjin is Focusing on Exporting North Korean Coal to China ― February 24, 2025

Recent analysis of Chongjin reveals a decrease in identifiable oil tankers alongside increased coal export activity this year. However, analysis of major ports along North Korea’s east coast shows a unique increase in tanker traffic only at Wonsan. This requires further confirmation but considering the surge in construction activity at the Kalma Tourist Zone following Kim Jong Un’s December order to open the zone by June, it suggests a concentration of resources, including oil and various construction materials, in Wonsan, specifically dedicated to the tourist zone. Furthermore, the rise in coal exports indicates that Rajin port is being used exclusively for exporting Russian coal to China, leaving Chongjin port dedicated to exporting all North Korean coal produced in North Hamgyong province.
