Estimated 700 North Korean troops have Died fighting in Kursk ― Apr 10, 2026

North Korea is providing luxurious state housing to the families of fallen soldiers deployed to Russia, while constructing a large-scale Battle Merit Memorial nearby. It is expected that the regime will hold a solemn ceremony for the enshrinement of the remains on the Day of the Sun on April 15, followed by a grand inauguration ceremony on April 26—the first anniversary of the liberation of Kursk—to consolidate internal solidarity. Holding such large-scale events in two phases appears intended to secure the legitimacy of the deployment and establish overseas military operations on a permanent basis. It seems aimed at strengthening internal solidarity by repeatedly instilling these events as exemplary models for the public to use as a tool for ideological education. Meanwhile, the number of fallen North Korean soldiers is estimated to be around 700; among them, 178 soldiers who sacrificed their own lives are being given separate gravesites. This appears intended to further heroize them and educate future generations to follow in their footsteps.
