Expediting the Construction of a large-scale Hospital for the Treatment of Wounded Russian Soldiers―May 15, 2026
written by SI Analytics
A groundbreaking ceremony was recently held in Wonsan for the large-scale North Korea-Russia Friendship Hospital. With the addition of this facility, the area now hosts two major medical centers including the large-scale hospital previously completed within the adjacent Kalma Coastal Tourist Area. Construction is progressing rapidly by utilizing and retrofitting existing onsite structures. Considering the attendance of two Russian cabinet ministers, the decision to build in Wonsan rather than Pyongyang, and past cases of treating Russian casualties from the Ukraine war last year, this project is assessed as a strategic move to accommodate a larger influx of wounded Russian servicemen. Furthermore, by utilizing the nearby Songdowon International Children’s Camp, the site is expected to be more suitable for maintaining operational security compared to a location in Pyongyang.
Meanwhile, to achieve tangible results following the DPRK-Russia Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, a large number of high-level officials have been visiting Pyongyang. Recently, with the signing of specific action plans, the cooperation appears to have entered a practical execution phase across various fields.
