Hypersonic Missiles Expected to be Equipped starting from Third New Destroyer―May 29, 2026

The destroyer Kang Gun, which ran aground during its launching ceremony in May of last year, departed Rason Port in September and returned to Chongjin Port. Since then, it has been undergoing engine installation and armament overhauls, including modifications to its Vertical Launch System (VLS) similar to the Choi Hyun, and all maintenance work is expected to be completed soon. Furthermore, indicators near the Chongjin Shipyard—such as the replacement of railway sleepers at nearby Sunam Station, the paving of the road leading to the shipyard, and the maintenance of propaganda billboards—suggest that an on-site visit by Kim Jong Un is imminent. While Kim Jong Un has visited the first destroyer, Choi Hyun, nine times since its launching ceremony, he has not yet visited the Kang Gun. Notably, since this past March, he has visited the Choi Hyun five times specifically during its operational capability evaluations, demonstrating his intense interest in the combat capacity of these vessels. Therefore, this upcoming visit to the Chongjin is expected to serve as an official announcement to both domestic and international audiences that the second destroyer, which previously faced initial launch issues, has successfully commenced its operational capability evaluations by demonstrating strategic missile test-firings and other combat readiness drills.
