Furthermore, following last year’s failed attempt to attract a large volume of Russian tourists, China’s fourth-highest-ranking official, Wang Huning, visited the Kalma area last week. This aligns with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recent visit to Pyongyang in June, where he noted plans to expand cooperation not only in economy and diplomacy but across all sectors, including military, politics, society, and culture. As a concrete cooperative measure in tourism, the recruitment of Chinese tourists to the Kalma Area is highly anticipated. The fact that Wang Huning, a member of the top leadership circle, personally inspected the tourist site suggests de facto state endorsement of Kalma tourism. This development is becoming increasingly concrete, particularly given recent reports that a train-based tour route connecting Dandong, Sinuiju, and Pyongyang will soon be launched. Moving forward, it is anticipated that group tourism—China’s primary consumer segment—will be authorized, drawing intense interest to how the two nations will also expand cooperation in the military sector.
