Long Restoration needed for grounded destroyer in Chongjin ― Sep 12, 2025

Overall, Chongjin is conducting stable trade activities centered on coal exports from the Kimchaek Iron and Steel Complex. However, the ‘Kang Gun’, the second new destroyer recently launched at Rajin Port, has returned to Chongjin. Based on the precedent of the first destroyer at the Nampo, it is expected to remain docked at the port for about five months to conduct weapons testing, after which it will proceed to sea trials for performance evaluation. Unlike in Nampo, however, the Kang Gun’ has recently been fitted with camouflage netting across its upper sections, and it appears that significant internal problems have occurred. Although a grand launching ceremony was held, the vessel seems to have suffered damage to its armaments, including the VLS, for which large numbers of personnel have been mobilized. This appears to be an effort to quickly repair the warship, which has a maze-like internal structure, but given the possibility of structural issues such as hull deformation, it is expected that a considerable amount of time will be required before it can actually be commissioned.
