The inauguration ceremony for the first-ever vehicular bridge between North Korea and Russia, which was originally scheduled to take place today, June 19th—marking the second anniversary of the establishment of the North Korea-Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership—is expected to be significantly delayed. While on the surface this can be attributed to substantial delays in Russian engineering, numerous suspicious factors remain given that North Korea’s sole contribution has been the construction of a single support building. Considering the scale of the support facilities currently under construction for the New Yalu River Bridge in Sinuiju, as well as the support facilities presently being built by Russia, the infrastructure is assessed to be significantly inadequate for a customs and border checkpoint facility intended to process a daily volume of 300 vehicles and 2,850 personnel. Furthermore, this discrepancy raises critical questions regarding how the at $173 million construction budget funded by the Russian government was actually utilized.
