Recently, North Korea and Russia have been fast-tracking the construction of a vehicle bridge in the border region, with both nations focusing heavily on the bridge deck installation. While North Korea continues to install support columns between the main columns, progress on other support facilities remains minimal. In contrast, Russia is deploying a significant amount of construction equipment to maintain access roads from the rear areas and proceed with infrastructure work for adjacent facilities; notably, foundation work for the main building of the customs and border control post is currently underway. Meanwhile, the spacing between the bridge piers on the North Korean side has become extremely dense due to the installation of support columns, whereas the Russian side maintains the original 66-meter spacing. Consequently, it is assessed that if China seeks to access the Pacific Ocean via the Tumengang in the future, it will inevitably require Russia’s consent. This signifies that China’s exit to the East Sea is effectively under Russian control. It means that the maritime outlet so desperately yearned for by Chinese Three Northeast Provinces remains restricted to N.K.’s Rajin Port and Russia’s Zarubino Port. Furthermore, considering the recent closeness between North Korea and Russia, China is bound to face even tighter monitoring and containment from the Russian side.
