As Chinese President Xi Jinping recently visited North Korea and called for the full reopening of border customs ports, North Korea is concentrating its resources to open the New Yalu River Bridge, which has been stalled for 12 years since its construction. This serves to restore the North Korea-China alliance while countering Russia, whose ties with North Korea have rapidly deepened due to the war in Ukraine. Furthermore, given the aging state of the existing bridge—which handles 70% of current North Korea-China overland trade via a single railway and a single-lane vehicle road—the use of the new four-lane bridge is expected to trigger a logistics revolution that sharply increases transport volume. This will provide a new breakthrough for the North Korean economy and is anticipated to accelerate the development of the Sinuiju Special Economic Zone. In the future, North Korea is expected to strengthen its economic and military cooperation by leveraging both Russia and China as dual pillars, which will disrupt the geopolitical balance on the Korean Peninsula and likely drive Pyongyang toward further military adventurism. Additionally, while UN sanctions related to weapons of mass destruction (WMD) are poised to lose even more efficacy, the rapid influx of foreign ideas could simultaneously heighten internal instability within North Korea.
