North Korea to Build 8,000-Ton Destroyers Following 5,000-Ton Class ― Mar 24, 2026

The Kang Gun, North Korea’s second new-type destroyer, is currently undergoing a full armament system replacement identical to the lead ship (the Choi Hyun) located in Nampo. To fulfill Kim Jong Un’s directive to build two vessels of the same or larger class every year, the Chongjin Shipyard appears to be constructing an additional large-scale dry dock. The third new-type surface combatant currently under construction at Nampo Shipyard is expected to be equipped with hypersonic weapon systems that are difficult to detect and intercept, thereby enhancing its offensive capabilities. Consequently, it is anticipated that the Vertical Launch System (VLS) will be resized to a larger configuration. Furthermore, it is projected that an 8,000-ton class destroyer will be unveiled in the future.
