Promoting Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula through Tourism in N.K. ― February 7, 2025

North Korea, under Kim Jong Un’s directive, appears to have resumed construction at the Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Zone with the aim of opening it in June of this year. Efforts are focused on constructing a double fence to separate the tourist zone from the nearby Wonsan Airport. However, some facilities remain unfinished and abandoned, suggesting that a full opening this year is unlikely. It is anticipated that North Korea will prioritize key hotels and beaches to attract Russian tourists initially. Furthermore, given President Trump’s recent remarks on resuming talks with North Korea, it’s possible that Washington may attempt to link the development of coastal tourist zones on N.K. east coast with denuclearization negotiations. The success of such an approach remains uncertain and depends on a multitude of complex geopolitical factors.
