As North Korea modernizes its core Pyongyang defense installations, such as Sunchon and Pukchang Airfields, it is reinforcing hardened aircraft shelters (HAS) to ensure survivability. Notably, Pukchang Airfield has been undergoing a relatively prolonged reconstruction program. This modernization has extended the runway by 300 meters to a total length of 2,800 meters and appears to include additional upgrades to subterranean hangar facilities. Given its potential utilization as an operational hub for new Russian-manufactured fighter jets scheduled for future induction, persistent tracking remains imperative. Furthermore, considering that two out of the four Mi-26s—North Korea’s largest heavy-lift helicopters utilized for regime leadership events—are currently undergoing maintenance, there appears to be a possibility of additional rotary-wing cooperation with Russia.
