Russia’s Increasing Dependence on North Korean weapons ― Sep 19, 2025

Despite the conclusion of North Korean combat operations in Ukraine last April, North Korea continues to supply arms to Russia through Rajin Port and has even increased its support in recent times. North Korea’s continued supply of weapons appears intended to showcase its military alliance with Russia while increasing Russia’s dependence on North Korean arms, thereby securing greater amounts of foreign currency, fuel, food, and military technology. In addition, by continuously providing weapons, it seeks to test their performance in actual combat and apply the results to the development of its own weapons systems. Externally, North Korea also appears to be seeking to use its alliance with Russia as diplomatic leverage in negotiations with the United States and to restructure the current U.S.-led international security order.
