Sinuiju Update #7: Developing Uiju Airfield into a Hub for Strategic Operations―May 8, 2026

To restore the Sinuiju region, which suffered extensive flood damage from torrential rains in July 2024, large-scale personnel and equipment were mobilized primarily for embankment projects along the Yalu River and nearby small streams. With the completion of a massive greenhouse farm last February in Wihwa-do—the area most severely affected—construction activities now appear to have concluded. However, despite the completion of ornate residential structures along the Wihwa-do waterfront—highly visible from the Chinese side—significant portions of the inland areas have been overlooked, with flood recovery efforts remaining incomplete. Meanwhile, Uiju Airfield has been undergoing runway improvement projects for large-scale aircraft since last October. The site is highly likely to serve as an operational base for North Korea’s newly developed strategic assets, including the Saetbyol-4 strategic reconnaissance UAV and the Saetbyol-9 attack UAV. Furthermore, as multifaceted cooperation between North Korea and Russia—specifically the five-year military cooperation plan (2027–2031)—takes shape, Uiju appears positioned to act as a strategic gateway for importing advanced military technology and materials. Notably, its location—situated approximately 2km from the Chinese border—is seen as advantageous for ensuring relative operational security and safety.
