Stable Trade activities at Nampo Port ― May 23, 2025

An analysis of recent activity involving large vessels (Over 50m) and oil tankers in North Korea’s Nampo indicates stable operations. Specifically, a consistent number of oil tankers transporting refined oil imported from Russia remain active. At Nampo Port’s oil piers, activities such as repainting existing storage tanks and preparations to install additional ones are also being identified. Considering the ‘honeymoon’ relationship with Russia, these activities are expected to continue.
Since North Korea began its full-scale supply of artillery shells to Russia in August 2022, its oil tanker activity has gradually increased. This activity has notably stabilized, particularly since September of last year. This development seems attributable to President Putin’s visit to Pyongyang in June of last year and the signing of the Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Furthermore, cement export activities at Nampo Port appear to have ceased. Meanwhile, at the container pier, which primarily handles trade with China, import and export activities are ongoing, utilizing both general cargo ships and container ships that continue to operate. Additionally, the recently built new destroyer, the Choi Hyun, seems to be undergoing maintenance at Nampo Shipyard after completing its armament test firings.
