The First New Destroyer ‘CHOI HYUN’ update #2 : Multiple Weapon Systems Replaced ― Nov 7, 2025

The first of the new destroyers completed in late April has undergone several weapons-fit changes. SLBM-capable vertical-launch systems were removed and replaced with smaller-format VLS (Vertical Launch Systems) cells; a newly installed close-in weapon system (CIWS) and older 14.5 mm heavy machine guns have been fitted. Analysts assess these modifications as reflecting a reorientation toward survivability and enhanced air-defense capability, rather than prioritizing land-attack missions. Drawing on recent operational experience from deployments and weapons support in Russia, North Korea appears to be concentrating on regional deterrence – particularly in the waters near the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the West Sea. Also, Pyongyang is reorganizing its shipboard armament around medium format VLS to enhance operational and sustainment efficiency, instead of maintaining a focus on long-range ballistic missiles.
The reconfiguration of the ship’s weapon systems is expected to produce considerable challenges for integration with the vessel’s combat command-and-control architecture. Given that the destroyer remains in a maintenance state for its weapons systems and that an operational-performance assessment at sea has not been completed, prolonged period of systems integration, testing, and trials will be necessary before the ship can be declared operationally deployable.
